The Therapeion 2020 Derby is On!
Updated: Oct 3, 2020
We all know about the regular Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing — the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes. Â
This year, COVID-19 turned all that upside down and sideways, with the Kentucky Derby being September 5th and the Preakness moving to October 3rd. (The Belmont Stakes was already run on June 20th.)

Therapeion’s horses wanted to get into the spirit of the season, but none of them is really in shape for a traditional race -- they work hard to be the patient, well-behaved steeds our clients depend on for classes. Thus, they aren't really practiced at speed, and none of them are thoroughbreds (but don't tell them that).  So, we enlisted some of our students, their families, and volunteers to help us do the next best thing. Thereapeion is having its own Derby!
Yes, are having a month-long Therapeion Derby!
We have 3 of our finest steeds in competition and you can help decide the winner! Each team is out to raise funds for Therapeion with their horse. The money raised will go to scholarships and horse care, furthering Therapeion's mission of healing, hope, and fun. The team that raises the most money by noon on October 3rd will be the winner! The winning teams get bragging rights and tuition credits to use during the next year. The winning horse gets lots of praise and a few extra cookies.
Here are the racers:
Team Lyle has jockeys Makyla and Skyla, with trainer Gail.
Team Duke has jockey Michael and trainer Ginny.
Team Dude has jockey Ainsley and trainer Linda.
An overall leaderboard can be found at the bottom of this page.
So, join in the fun (after the Derby officially starts). Contribute to one or more of the teams and help move them into the winner's circle! (Derby donors of more than $100 will be recognized on our Wall of Donors.)
Remember that Therapeion is a registered 501(c)(3) charity and all contributions are tax deductible.
